NWTF Unveils Future Conservation Plans

To best tackle the greatest habitat issues across the county, The National Wild Turkey Federation (NWTF) recently identified and grouped imperiled habitats from across the country into America’s Big Six of Wildlife Conservation, focusing efforts to keep forests healthy, water clean and stop critical habitat loss. “The NWTF is committed to conserving or enhancing 4 million acres of habitat through our Save the Habitat. Save the Hunt. initiative,” said Becky Humphries, NWTF chief conservation officer. “With the identification of America’s Big Six of Conservation, the NWTF can direct our conservation efforts to the areas with critical habitat needs.” The areas of distinction within the Big Six include 738 million acres of identified focal landscapes. The NWTF’s limited funds will have a greater impact in meeting the conservation needs within each region. It also will ensure the wild turkey population’s health and stability for future generations. The defined areas are America’s Western Wildlands, America’s Great Open Spaces, America’s Crossroads, America’s Colonial Forests, America’s Southern Piney Woods and America’s Mid-South Rebirth.
