Common Sense About Scent Elimination

It’s no secret, that odor control is critical to hunting success.  For deer, elk, and other big game animals the sense of smell is their primary defense mechanism, it is the sense they rely on the most to detect danger and avoid threats.  A deer’s sense of smell is significantly better than you or I have.  Deer have up to 297 million olfactory (scent) receptors in their nose.  Humans?  Just five (5) million.  In addition, deer have two (2) large scent processing areas in their brains, and these areas are nine (9x) times larger than the processing area of a human, so it is clear to see why overcoming a deer’s sense of smell is so difficult and a critical element in any successful hunt.

For as long as man has been hunting big game, he has been trying to mask his human odor.  From playing the wind to soaking your clothing in a pile of leaves, to covering yourself in wood smoke, early hunters knew the importance of scent control when hunting.  The business of scent control has become a multi-million-dollar industry with detergents, sprays, lotions, bags, lockers, gizmos, ozone generators, you name it, hunters have probably bought it, tried it, and in most cases been frustrated by the results.

But to be truly effective in the woods, you must understand the difference between active and passive scent control.  Understanding this difference and acting on it can be the difference between a great hunt, or just another sit in the woods.

Active vs. Passive Scent Control

The problem with traditional scent elimination products in the hunting industry (think sprays, laundry detergents, foams, shampoos, even scent free bags and closets) is that they are passive in nature – they can only treat the existing odor on any garment or on your skin, but they cannot actively treat any new odors your body may be giving off during your hunt.  They treat a moment in time, but not the moment that matters most – when the animal enters your down-wind airstream. They begin to degrade the second they are applied and begin to be utilized.  And to be clear, at the end of the day, hunters should not concern themselves with the odors on their bodies or on their clothing, but rather the odors that leave their body and enter the down wind air stream.  It seems counter intuitive, but we as hunters should care less about what we smell like, or what odors are on us, and we should be more focused on the odor that enters the airstream where deer can pick them up using their 297 million olfactory receptors.

Our bodies are continually producing odors and releasing them into the air – they go wherever the wind blows.  So, to be effective, we must use products that continually and actively treat any odors our body may be giving off and polluting the downwind airstream. Ozone is the one product that can do this.  Sprays, lotions, even newly touted Ion technology cannot do this.

How Ozone Works

Ozone is a highly unstable molecule comprised of 3 oxygen molecules. It is created when oxygen is hit with an electrical charge, cracking O2 and creating O3.  Because it is so unstable, it wants to revert to the more stable O2.  It does this by attaching to another oxygen molecule or to anything else it can find.  This is commonly known as oxidation.  In the case of hunters, we are looking to attach the ozone molecules to our odor, essentially a bacteria molecule, and specifically our odor in the downwind airstream.  Only one company can currently offer this technology… Ozonics. Ozonics pioneered this technology over 15 years ago and revolutionized the hunting industry when they incorporated oxidative odor elimination technology into an open-air environment, creating the first and only active odor elimination process.

A process that allows the hunter to use ozone to continuously reduce, alter, or destroy odor in the downwind airstream.  Making them virtually undetectable to deer and other animals. Ever since Ozonics has been developing and perfecting in-the-field ozone generators that do not merely treat the odors on your clothing or your body, but more importantly treat the odor in the downwind airstream that your body is giving off or “shedding”.  Breathing, sweating, passing gas – it all creates a human odor footprint that deer and other big game animals can easily detect.  Through the generation of ozone, Ozonics units are constantly producing millions of ozone molecules and scrubbing the air by reducing, altering, or eliminating odor as it is released from your body and into the downwind airstream.  The only truly active scent elimination technology on the market.

Ozonics disruptive technology has literally changed the way people hunt. Now in 2022 Ozonics has done it again with the introduction of the most technically advanced Ozonics unit ever created, the new HR500.  The HR500 features a reconfigured fan placement and new exclusive phoenix circuit board for quieter operation, and it has incorporated Bluetooth technology, allowing the user to operate the unit via the Ozonics App or with an optional remote key fob.  The new App is intended to be both an control center and an information center for the hunter and provides users the ability to control every function of the unit from your smartphone, and provides you with data critical to your hunting success such as battery life in hours and minutes, current weather conditions, wind speeds and direction, etc.

So, if you are asking “what is the best scent elimination for hunting?”, the answer is a product that provides active scent elimination, using the most powerful oxidant available that is designed specifically for in the field use.  The answer is Ozonics.  And the most powerful, efficient, and effective Ozonics unit is the new HR500.  The new HR500 From Ozonics is 40% quieter in Boost mode than it predecessor – the OrionX.  In addition, the new HR500 can be controlled via the new Ozonics App.  This blue tooth app puts complete control of the unit and critical data in the palm of your hands. Never again guess how much battery life is left, and never again have to reach up to change the output mode.

The app also provides you with current weather conditions, wind speed, wind direction, etc. Finally, the HR500 can be paired to an optional remote which allows you to quickly increase your ozone output when you need it most.  When paired, and the button is pressed on the remote, your HR500 will automatically go to the next level of ozone output for 15 minutes.  Wind picking up?  Deer getting a bit jumpy?  More noses to beat entering your downwind airstream? Simply press the button and increase your ozone output with limited movement.  The New HR500 is clearly the undisputed odor destroying heavyweight king when it comes to active scent control for hunters, and a must have for any whitetail hunter looking to increase their odds of success.
