Todd Taylor, one of the owners as well as ranch manager of Fox Canyon Ranch, recently shared with us a video of a bull elk rescue. Mr. Taylor, who is an avid “bow only” elk hunter, was scouting Fox Canyon Ranch in preparation for an upcoming elk hunt when he spotted a 6 by 6 bull elk with its head down thrashing a bush as if it was starting to rut. After watching it from a distance for several minutes, he realized that the bull had caught its antlers and neck in a metal cable attached to the ground and couldn’t get free.
After an hour and a half, Mr. Taylor was able to free the bull elk using cable cutters. Both he and the elk were totally exhausted toward the end. At one point, with Mr. Taylor trying to stay away from the bull’s antlers, the elk just missed kicking his left knee with its right hind hoof. What could have been a dangerous moment for both, turned out well and the elk was freed.
