Boone and Crockett Club names endowment after Dr. James “Red” Duke
The Boone and Crockett Club will give a $4 million endowment to Texas A&M University and name it after noted heart surgeon, conservationist, and Texas A&M graduate, Dr. James “Red” Duke. The endowment will expand the university’s existing B&C Wildlife and Conservation Policy Program, which will now bear Duke’s name. The Club has commenced raising the funds for the endowment. “He loved wild spaces. He loved the land and he loved to hunt,” said 25-year B&C member Jayar Daily, a friend of Duke. “As president of Boone and Crockett in the 1980s, he invigorated our Club by reigniting Teddy Roosevelt’s founding vision and refocusing the national importance of conservation and wildlife management.” With the help of the pledged funds, the renamed Boone and Crockett Dr. Red Duke Wildlife Conservation and Policy Program will better develop future policymakers who will need to make informed decisions about ensuring the safe future of our nation’s wildlife populations and their habitats. In addition to supporting more graduate researchers, the program will enter into an interdisciplinary partnership with the university’s Bush School of Government and Public Service. It will include capstone courses that connect wildlife science with policy.
