TTHA Writer Honored By Pope & Young
The Pope & Young Club, a non-profit North American conservation and bowhunting organization, is proud to announce Jim Heffelfinger received the Lee Gladfelter Memorial Award. Heffelfinger, a Journal writer, is also a Regional Game Specialist with the Arizona Game and Fish Department. He also serves as an Adjunct Professor at the University of Arizona. Jim has written two books and authored or co-authored 27 technical papers on a wide array of wildlife species and topics. For several years, Heffelfinger has been working on a massive project involving the validation of whitetail deer, Coues deer, mule deer and blacktail deer DNA. Markers have been isolated and processes created that can definitively determine the subspecies of an individual.
The project not only will help guide wildlife management and conservation strategies, but can assist the Pope and Young Club and the Boone and Crockett Club in fine-tuning or validating geographic boundaries and authenticating individual specimen. The Lee Gladfelter Memorial Award recognizes wildlife professionals who, through their efforts, have made a significant contribution to bowhunting and wildlife conservation.
