County pays $5 a tail for feral hog bounty
The San Antonio Express-News reports Hays County has become the second county to implement a feral hog bounty program. Guadalupe County launched a similar program earlier this month. Hunters may start collecting hog tails beginning today, and they must be turned in to the county by Aug. 22. Each tail is worth $5. “Feral hogs continue to pose significant problems for both agriculture producers and residential property owners in Hays County,” Hays County Extension Agent for Agriculture and Natural Resources Jason Mangold told the newspaper. The county launched the program after receiving a grant from Texas A&M AgriLife Extension Services. The grant will also help fund a feral hog workshop and webinar, a countywide damage assessment, and financial assistance to some landowners attempting to trap hogs.
