Squirrel Hunting Big Deal In East Texas

East Texas squirrel season runs through Feb. 26

For die-hard squirrel hunters in East Texas, the upcoming deer season is a mere sideshow, according to outdoor blogger Shannon Tompkins. The squirrel-hunting culture is that strong in this part of the state.
“If you are a skilled squirrel hunter, you’re a skilled hunter. Period,” he writes. “The lessons learned in the squirrel woods translate to every other form of hunting.”
According to Tompkins, East Texas is the heart of squirrel hunting in the state, and the only region where it’s popular. He also says hunting either fox squirrels or gray squirrels can be quite challenging—and rewarding.
