New Hunter Workshop Set For Saturday

All-day event will cover the basics

The New Hunter Workshop-A Field to Table Introduction to Big Game Hunting in Texas, will teach the basics to those getting their first start into the world of hunting. It’s set for 9:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. on Oct. 15 at the Nannie Stringfellow Wildlife Management Area off County Road 317 near Brazoria. Texas AgriLife Extension and the Texas Parks and Wildlife Department will host the event.

Instructors will offer insights, knowledge, and skills focused on big-game hunting in Texas to attendees. Topics will include information on Texas’ public hunting programs, insights into hunting those areas, hunting clothing and equipment, hunting regulations, and firearms and ammunition selection for different game animals. The firearms portion of the workshop will feature the different calibers and actions of rifles for big-game hunting in Texas. Instructors will offer basic instruction in marksmanship and firearms and hunting safety as well. TPWD’s hunter education program staff will have .22-caliber rifles for safe gun handling and marksmanship training. Participants will have the opportunity to fire as many as 50 rounds during that part of the workshop.

It’s limited to 30 participants, but according to spokesman Bill Balboa, there are still a few spots open. Registration is $50, which includes lunch. For more information or to register, contact Bill Balboa at [email protected] or call 979-245-4100.
