Five wolves have been released in the Sierra San Luis mountain range of northeastern Sonora, the Mexican environmental group Naturalia said in a news release. The wolf release occurred Oct. 11. The group gave no specific information about where the release occurred, but the mountain range abuts the New Mexico and Arizona borders with Sonora. According to the Arizona Daily Star, the release came after years of planning by Mexican officials and opposition by U.S. ranchers. The release is part of an effort to re-establish the species in its historic range.
