The National Rifle Association has filed a petition of certiorari to the U.S. Supreme Court in the case of NRA v. Chicago. In that case, The U.S. Court of Appeals for the Seventh Circuit held that the Second Amendment does not apply to state and local governments, and thus upheld current bans on the possession of handguns in Chicago and Oak Park, Ill. This runs contrary to what a U.S. appeals court in San Francisco ruled earlier this year. That court ruled the Second Amendment does cover state gun restrictions. If the justices decide to take up the appeal, it would probably be heard next fall.—courtesy National Shooting Sports Foundation and USA Today |
