Texas Trophy Hunters is proud to introduce the 2009 Youth Essay Contest. Youths, ages 10-17, are encouraged to write a 500 word or less essay beginning with the sentence “The number of hunters in the United States has steadily decreased over the past several years. If I were put in charge of recruiting more people to participate in hunting, I would …“
Two of the goals of the Texas Trophy Hunters Association (TTHA) are to promote the education of youth in securing the future of the hunting tradition and to extend the goodwill of members through community outreach. In 2009, that goodwill is going to reach one lucky youth in the form of a FREE Whitetail buck hunt in the Texas Hill Country. In addition, the winner will be awarded a membership in the Texas Trophy Hunters Association and their hunt will be featured in the Journal of the Texas Trophy Hunters.

Public Comment On New Deer Regs Sought
Texas Parks and Wildlife Department (TPWD), in a recent briefing of its Commission’s Regulations Committee, unveiled an extensive suite of potential regulation changes to the deer harvest throughout much of the state. The department will be gathering public input on the possible proposals over the next few months, after which it will present a comprehensive set of proposals to the Committee. Those proposals will then go back out for official comment during a series of public hearings to be held around the state in the spring of 2009. A final decision on the proposals will be made by the commission at its March 25-26, 2009 public meeting.

On the heels of initiatives like “No Child Left Inside” and in response to the growing need to do more for our community, Texas Trophy Hunters Association (TTHA) teamed up with City Kids Adventures to provide a meaningful, outdoor experience to a small group of inner-city kids. Six supervised boys and girls took to the woods at Whispering Water Ranch in Menard, Texas in a successful attempt to dust the pavement off their shoes and put on some good, clean dirt.

TEXAS TROPHY HUNTERS ASSOCIATION PARTICIPATES IN THE WHITE HOUSE CONFERENCE ON NORTH AMERICAN WILDLIFE POLICY
(Reno, NV) Texas Trophy Hunters Association (TTHA) and its membership were represented last week at the White House Conference on North American Wildlife Policy. The 2008 Conference marked the 100th anniversary of the original Governor’s Conference on Conservation convened by President Theodore Roosevelt. Executive Order #13443: Facilitation of Hunting Heritage and Wildlife Conservation was signed by President George W. Bush on August 17, 2007. This Order directs Federal agencies “to facilitate the expansion and enhancement of hunting opportunities and the management of game species and their habitat.” In addition, the Order calls for the coordination of efforts of the Sporting Conservation Council Federal Advisory Committee, state fish and wildlife agencies and the public to establish policy which respects state management authority and private landowner rights. Measures to preserve our hunting heritage through youth programs were a priority topic of discussion as well.

Show of Support was developed in 2004 by Terry Johnson of Midland, Texas, as his way of saying “Thank You” to the men and women of our military. Show of Support conducts an annual parade and banquet to honor our heroes. The 2008 Hunt for Heroes banquet will be held Thursday, November 20th at the Horseshoe Arena in Midland, TX. The event will be preceded by a parade.
